Forest Hill Pump Station Upgrade

The San Francisco Water Power Sewer (SFPUC) are rebuilding the existing Forest Hill Pump Station located on Mendosa Avenue. This water pump station serves a very important role in delivering potable water to its surrounding neighborhoods in the Golden Gates Heights district as well as providing water for fire protection. This project is one of 86 Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) projects that will repair, replace and seismically upgrade the Hetch Hetchy water delivery system.

Built in 1964, the existing pump station building, mechanical and electrical systems have exceeded their useful life and are in need of replacement. The existing structure no longer complies with current seismic and building codes, is inadequate to withstand a moderate earthquake and is susceptible to fire. The new station will comply with the latest fire, building, and ADA accessibility code requirements and be constructed of materials to resist fire, seismic and other catastrophic events. Primary building materials will be concrete and steel. New piping entering and leaving the station will be fitted with flexible joints that will allow movement during seismic events. Modern, energy-efficient pumps, motors and controls will be installed.

A temporary pump station has been installed on Quintara Street by Cragmont Avenue to serve the community during construction of the new pump station and will remain in place until the new pump station is completed in 2013. A pedestrian sidewalk path was installed and allows the bus stop to remain accessible.

Construction Scedule
Our contractor, NTK Construction Inc., began construction activities in October 2011. Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.

Please don't throw pills/medicine away in the toilet or trash! They can end up in the Bay or ocean.

The Goats are returning to Laguna Honda. Goats will be on-site at the Laguna Honda Reservoir beginning Wed. Sept. 1, 2010 and continuing for the next several days. Additional clean-up efforts will be undertaken near 7th Ave. and Locksley.

Goats are Heading to Laguna Honda Area

Tuesday afternoon Goats-R-Us will deliver a herd of goats to SFPUC's Laguna Honda property along 7th Avenue to help trim overgrown and dried vegetation that might otherwise fuel a fire. Of course, a sheepherder will accompany the goats and they will be carefully monitored so as not to munch on any protected foliage. They should be grazing along the hillside for the remainder of the week.

Stanford Heights Reservoir Update - Summer 2010

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we’ve been rebuilding the Stanford Heights Reservoir and Mt Davidson Pump Station.

With the seismic upgrades complete, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission/Water Department is addressing a few outstanding items this summer.

The heavy springtime rains brought some of the tallest weeds we’ve ever seen throughout San Francisco! The goats will be coming to the reservoir this summer as an environmentally-friendly way to remove the high weeds behind the reservoir fence. Watch for them soon!

The Department of Public Works will repave Agua Way between Teresita and Chaves in September or October due to two sewer repair projects that are scheduled on the street this summer. Once they complete their projects, they will repave the street as promised.

The Water Department will paint the blue valves and other equipment on Agua Way this summer. Bamboo and other plants were added this past spring.

The temporary orange fencing around the reservoir will be removed soon.

The Goats are coming to Stanford Heights Reservoir this summer!

Those high weeds behind the fence at Stanford Heights Reservoir will soon be lunch for a herd of goats!

The popular return of the goats will take place this summer - most likely in early August. With the heavy winter and spring rains, the weeds are tall and thick this year at the reservoir.

The goats are a fun and environmentally-friendly way for the City to control weeds. Power mowers use gas and often cannot reach steep areas of weeds on our properties. Using the goats also reduces the need for herbicides to control weeds.

The following Q&A was handed out at the June 8 meeting with neighbors regarding the Laguna Honda Reservoir area.
In April 2010 the SFPUC was asked to provide information about the planned use of an area at the Laguna Honda Reservoir

Provide documentation of all planned/anticipated and “emergency” activities of the SFPUC at the site:
• Frequency
• Duration
• # of staff on site at any given time
• Regularly scheduled activity outline/emergency activity described
• # and size of vehicles expected on site consistent with regular planned activity
• # and size of vehicles expected on site for “emergency” activities

• The activities will be limited to the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with usually no more than one Dive Supervisor dealing with office work. The majority of the Divers are working at dive sites throughout the city. The Dive Team has three passenger trucks, so there will never be more than that number parking there at any given time. No trucks will be left there overnight.
• Once it has been placed on the site the trailer will provide office space for a couple of diver supervisors and a small workshop to repair and maintain items such as air stations, helmets, dry suits, ROVs, cameras, power and light units, and filling air cylinders.

What were/are the criteria used by the SFPUC in selecting the Lake Honda site for these facilities and activities?
When the dive shop left Treasure Island, the City Distribution Division researched other SFPUC land to house the dive shop. The criteria for a new site included:
• Central location to quickly service a majority of reservoirs (Sunset, Merced Manor, Sutro, Summit, Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson & Forest Hill tanks that are close to this location).
• Unobtrusive location; the actual site is below street level and below the driveway.
• Secure; behind locked gates (two gates).
• Location to water test gear, if necessary.The dive office may or may not be purchased and installed this year, it all depends on the available funding and the cost of the trailer. In the meantime, existing facilities will continue to be used. The generator will be removed once the transformer installation and connections are complete.

Can it be said that there will be no additional facilities, structures or activities at this site?
• After the trailer is placed in this location, other activities would be limited to placement of lattice screens/fences to obscure the structure from view and other plantings..

• The pad and green house covers SFPUC owned switchgear that would not produce any noticeable noise. The transformer is actually on the existing PG&E pole.

Can neighbors be assured that no one but authorized personnel will be accessing the site? Why were their reports of late night access to the site but no record of it by the Water Dept.?

• Aside from keys for beekeepers, only authorized Water Department personnel have access to this property. On the occasion referenced, a dept. staff person may have had to access this site but that is highly unusual and not a regular occurrence.

Community asked for copy of the WEISS natural areas study. It could be posted at sfwater.org/natural areas.
We have scanned in the old report however since it is dated, the agency plans to have the study redone this fall or spring.

SFPUC staff will pursue the following landscaping and property upgrades at Lake Honda/Laguna Honda:
1. Obscure as much of the fencing as possible, both the fence along Clarendon and the interior fence with vines and other greenery. Place green fabric on interior fence gate as nothing can be planted near it. Also, since it is within the exterior fence, graffiti would not be a problem.

2. Extend the fence screen along the fire access road to obscure the bee boxes.

3. Coordinate with our Landscape Supervisor about planting more native plants for the area inside of the fences. Garden Project could be a resource here.

4. Staff is considering recommending that SFPUC Real Estate revoke the beekeeper’s permit in this area as they are extending beyond their restricted area.

4. Work together to minimize the impact of the sand and gravel mounds – we are proposing to relocate the gravel and sand to an area within the inner fence

5. Consider a screen for the gate on Clarendon, taking into consideration the potential for graffiti on any surface (could we get a gate with tighter weave?).

6. Notify SFPUC Communications of any change in the “regular operations” hours at the site so that the neighbors can be notified in advance.

Laguna Honda Comments

Following a meeting at Clarendon School last night with neighbors, SFPUC was asked to research and post previous comments regarding this area that had not been published. Digging into Blogger, we found 5 comments that are now linked to the May 14 posting. Below is a new comment that we received today.

For response and further discussion, look for the SFPUC handout from the June 8 meeting. At the meeting, neighbors asked the SFPUC to verify the zoning for this property. While we do that, Kevin Barry, City Distribution Manager, promised that the SFPUC dive and operations staff will not pursue any further activities at the site.

Peter Cook and a fellow beekeeper also reported to the group. Peter is working to consolidate the bee hives within his allotted 125 sq. feet and will try to make the hives more asethetically pleasing.

New Comment:
My husband and I are not very happy with the construction site posted up (seemingly permanently) at the bottom of Clarendon Street at Laguna Honda Lake area. That is an area that we were told would turn back to it's natural green state. It is important for wildlife, dog walkers and the trails within the area should be restored for recreational purposes.

There was the hidden away water pump station which wasn't done very green and eliminated a lot of forest and now this. Please help our community by moving PUC to another area.

Celebration on Mt Davidson

Friends and neighbors gathered under bright sunshine on Saturday morning, June 5th on top of Mt Davidson to celebrate the completion of three large Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) projects and rededicate a new plaque to the woman who helped preserve Mt Davidson as a park back in 1926.

Supervisor Sean Elsbernd opened the ceremonies by recognizing people from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Rec & Park Natural Areas Program and the many organizations and volunteers who worked with the City to ensure the critical water construction projects took place in harmony with native plants and natural habitats on the mountain.

The Mt Davidson Tank & Pipeline, Mt Davidson Pump Station and the Stanford Heights Reservoir are now updated, renovated and will help ensure water delivery and fire protection in the event of a major earthquake or other disaster.

Jacquie Proctor, local author, historian and co-founder of the Friends of Mt Davidson Conservancy, shared her vast knowledge of Mt Davidson's unique history. She shared historic photos of Mrs. Edmund "Madie" Brown, a courageous woman who in 1926, organized to prevent Mt Davidson from development so it could be enjoyed by the public as a park.

June 8th Community Meeting: Updates at Laguna Honda Reservoir

Neighbors of Laguna Honda Reservoir:

A community meeting with the SFPUC will take place on Tuesday June 8, 2010. The meeting will be held in the Auditorium at Clarendon School, 500 Clarendon, and will begin at 6:00pm.

SFPUC staff will provide updates on the improvements to the small area near the Clarendon Gate that were discussed and proposed in April. We will have updated illustrations of proposed changes to the site.

Laguna Honda

The SFPUC City Distribution Division will continue to use an area of the property at the Laguna Honda Reservoir. This area is just inside of the gate on Clarendon Ave. Activities and facilities for the site were the topic of a community meeting held on April 20, 2010. Below are some of the highlights of that community meeting:

With respect to the ongoing and regular use of the site by our Dive Team, here are the current plans:
• Regular activities at this site will be limited to the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with usually no more than one Diver Supervisor dealing with office work. A pad and structure have been installed close to the fence and gate on Clarendon Ave.

• The PG&E equipment referred to on the pad is a transformer with switch gear. It makes no sound and hence no reportable decibels. The structure surrounding the transformer is 8 feet tall by 3 feet deep by 7 feet long.
• Once the transformer is fully operational, the temporary generator will be removed.

We are planning a follow up with the community on Tuesday June 8th, stay tuned for more details.

San Andreas Pipeline No. 3 Update

New Mt Davidson Pump Station Nears Completion

The Mt Davidson Pump Station project team are making the final touches on the new, modern and efficient water pumping station located on Agua Way at La Bica.

The new building was designed to look like homes in the neighborhood and its new pumps and electrical equipment are modern and more energy efficient.

New landscaping is beginning to grow and bloom on the La Bica Path and surrounding the upgraded Stanford Heights Reservoir. New plants will be added in front of the pump station building soon.

Update: Eucalyptus and 19th Avenue in San Francisco

A contractor’s crew is beginning to dig a trench to install 36” diameter steel water pipe just west of the existing bore pit located at the intersection of Eucalyptus and 19th Avenue in San Francisco. The crew will be heading westbound along Eucalyptus to 22nd Avenue to install the water pipe. Later this spring, the installation will turn northbound up 22nd Avenue, terminating near Sloat Blvd. at the Merced Manor Reservoir.

Neighbors can expect some parking limitations, with 72 hours notification before any removal of parking. Iris Martin Lopez has been working with the nearby schools and the YMCA to ensure that daily routines are not obstructed. She can be reached at (415) 554-3222 or via email: ilopez@sfwater.org.

Rain temporarily halted work on Junipero Serra and Holloway, but workers will return this week as weather improves. Weather permitting, the contractor plans to complete work at that location by early April.

Public Comment Welcome on Agua Way Bamboo Plan

Our landscape folks have created a proposed planting plan for the area near the blue valves and chlorine building along Agua Way near Teresita. The plan includes beautiful clumping bamboo and blooming flowers that will create a 'green screen' that neighbors can enjoy instead of viewing the valves and other equipment.

You can view the drawings near the valves on Agua Way.

We will soon be painting the chlorine building, DPW will repave Agua Way this Spring and then we can plant proposed bamboo and flowers. Bamboo can grow between 12 and 16 feet in height and will fill out over time.

Junipero Serra and Holloway Update

As weather permits, construction crews are continuing open trench work to install a water pipeline along Junipero Serra Blvd. at Holloway in San Francisco. Currently, the south-bound lane on the left-hand side of the boulevard is closed to traffic, but well placed markings and traffic signage have kept cars moving smoothly.

Wildflowers Coming This Spring near Palo Alto Ave

This Spring, watch for colorful ,beautiful wildflowers on the Water Dept property near the intersection of Palo Alto Ave and Marview in the Twin Peaks area.

The area was recently "hydroseeded" as part of a restoration project requested by neighbors after the completion of the Palo Alto Pump Station. Hydroseeding often looks like paint at first - it is usually bright green or blue - and the concentrated seed mix germinates and blooms with rain or moisture.

Construction Update on Junipero Serra and Holloway Avenue in San Francisco

In anticipation of more rain this Friday, the construction crew at Junipero Serra and Holloway Avenue will finish securing and plating the trench today and will re-open the westbound lane of Holloway Avenue to traffic.

The team will resume work on the trench beginning Tuesday, February 16th, and for safety reasons must close the western-most (southbound) lane of Junipero Serra Blvd. until the work is completed. The SFPUC contractor will work extended hours on Tuesday and Wednesday in order to minimize the number of evenings that drivers will be inconvenienced along Junipero Serra.

Emergency Repairs at Junipero Serra and Holloway

A construction crew will be working through the night to reinforce the street at the intersection of Junipero Serra Boulevard and Holloway Avenue. To avoid a potential safety hazard for both motorists and pedestrians, crews will work on this area until it is safely repaired.

Additional police will be assigned to direct traffic at the intersection, and the westbound lane of Holloway Avenue has been closed to motorists until further notice. The SFPUC contractor is completing a drinking water pipeline installation and backfilling the trench at this location.

Snow Fence Added to Protect Plants at Stanford Heights Reservoir

Residents may notice snow fencing around the perimeter of Stanford Heights Reservoir this week. The temporary fence was added in order to protect the new landscaping recently installed and allow it to grow.

The fence will remain in place until the new plants and flowers have a chance to grow. It will be removed once the landscape team feel the plants are safe from damage.

Tragic Earthquake in Haiti a Shocking Reminder to Store Water and Be Prepared

The devastating and tragic 7.0 earthquake in Haiti on January 12th is a shocking reminder for all of us to be prepared for a major earthquake to strike the San Francisco Bay Area at any time.

4.1 Earthquake a Good Reminder to Prepare for the Big One

The 4.1 earthquake on January 7th was a good reminder to San Francisco residents that it is not a matter of if but WHEN the next big earthquake will strike. We all must prepare.

One of the best and easiest things residents can do is store tap water for emergency use. After a big earthquake, water mains may break and homes may be without water for several days. We are upgrading our pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations and other facilities to prepare for the earthquake.

Store at least one gallon of tap water per person per day to last at least three days. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight and change water every six months (pour water on a plant and refill bottle). You can reuse 2 liter soda bottles or use other food grade plastic or metal bottles for storing water.

Construction resumes in the Merced Manor Neighborhood

Mountain Cascade, Inc. contractor working for the SFPUC on the San Andreas Piepline No. 3 will begin the 36" water pipeline installation on Eucalyptus Drive. Construction will be ongoing throughout January.

The installation will continue in February along Eucalyptus Drive through 22nd Avenue to Sloat Boulevard.

Work hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Minor Traffic Impact on Thomas More Way

Today crews will begin pipeline excavation for the San Andreas Pipeline No.3 Installation project along Thomas More Way through the San Francisco Golf Club. A minor traffic deviation will take place on Thomas More Way, specially in front of Saint Thomas More Catholic School. The deviation is scheduled to impact commuters this week only.

We are working with the school and other nearby institutions to minimize disruptions.

Repaving of Rockdale - UPDATE!

New benches were installed today near the perimeter walking path at Sutro Reservoir, located off of Clarendon near Olympia.

The new benches were created by Asian Neighborhood Design's (AND) youth employment program.

Repaving of Rockdale and Agua Way

The City will repave Rockdale Drive from Isola to La Bica and Agua Way from Teresita to Chaves in the near future. The San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) will do the paving work and have tentatively scheduled to repave Rockdale in December or early 2010 and Agua Way in Spring 2010.

Why the Delay? The reason for the delay is due to the requirement to contact other utility agencies and give them a chance to schedule work on Rockdale and Agua BEFORE we repave. We do not allow utilities to dig up the recently repaved street for a period of time, so we give them some time before to check their maintenance schedules and give them enough time to complete work if necessary.

Mt Davidson Pump Station Nearing Completion!

The new Mt Davidson Pump Station, located on Agua Way at La Bica, is nearing completion! The terracotta roof is finished and the new stylish doors were recently installed.

New landscaping has also been installed on the La Bica Path. We have asked the contractor to keep the path closed off until the new plants and shrubs grow and fill-in the path.

The heavy equipment and storage containers on Agua Way should be removed by late November.

Repairs to the sidewalks on Agua Way should be complete in the next few weeks. Repaving of Agua Way will take place in Spring 2010.

Thank you to neighbors for your patience and support during this important construction project. The new pump station will help ensure water delivery to thousands of San Franciscans after the next big earthquake.

Mt Davidson Tank Update

Much of the heavy work to revitalize the water storage tank on top of Mount Davidson is complete. Thank you to all trail and park users for your patience and support during this important project. The water storage tank and pipeline improvements will help to ensure water reliability after the next big earthquake.

The planting of natural grasses on the slope below the water tank will begin in late December.

New Plants at Stanford Heights Reservoir

New plants are being installed this month around the perimeter of Stanford Heights Reservoir. New landscaping installation will continue at the site over the next month.

Once we complete landscaping and finish the new Mt Davidson Pump Station, located on Agua Way and La Bica, the chlorine building will get a much needed new coat of paint to match the new pump station.

In late winter/early spring, the hillsides behind the fence will begin to bloom with new native wildflowers.

San Andreas Pipeline No. 3 Installation In Full Construction

The pipeline installation mobilized this week at the intersection of Thomas More Way and Brotherhood Way. Crews will be crossing under this intersection on Monday, October 26th and will continue to Crespi Drive. SFPUC and Mountain Cascade, Inc. have coordinated efforts with Saint Thomas More Catholic School and Church and other nearby institutions in this area to minimize disruptions.

There will be continuous construction at the Crespi Drive round about circle accompanied by a bit that will be dug under Holloway Avenue to 19th Avenue.

Crews are also preparing to dig an additional bore pit at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Eucalyptus Drive. To comply with the City’s holiday construction moratorium, crews will cease construction in this area between the week of November 23, 2009 through the week of January 4, 2010. Construction will reconvene in mid-January 2010, with crews continuing to dig under Eucalyptus Drive to Merced Manor Reservoir.

Are You Ready for the Next Big Earthquake?

On October 21st, SFPUC staff shared important earthquake preparedness tips with neighbors at the Lakeshore Acres Neighborhood Association meeting.

The importance of storing water, preparing your house and being aware of potable water hydrants throughout San Francisco were discussed.

Be sure to store at least one gallon of water per person per day, to last at least 3 days. Store extra water for houseguests, pets and older neighbors who may need help after an earthquake.

The SFPUC recently published a new brochure with many great earthquake preparedness tips. The brochure is available on our website at http://www.sfwater.org/emergency

It has been over 20 years since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Now more than even, it is important to prepare yourself, your house, office and car so you can take care of yourself for at least the first 72 hours after a major earthquake or other disaster.

We are rebuilding our reservoir, pump stations and pipelines in San Francisco and throughout the region to prepare for that next big earthquake, which experts believe will happen in the next 30 years.

Water Temporarily Off on Agua Way on Tues, Oct 6th in morning

In order to connect the 2 inch and 4 inch pipes from the Mt Davidson Pump Station to the water main on Agua Way, the Water Department will temporarily turn off water to homes for a few hours on or around Tuesday, October 6th, most likely in the morning. A notice will be delivered to impacted homes. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience. The new pump station and pipes will help ensure water delivery after a major earthquake or disaster.

Native Wildflower Hydroseeding at Stanford Heights

Why is the hillside by the reservoir suddenly GREEN, you might be wondering? On October 1st, the contractor sprayed native wildflower seeds, through a process called hydroseeding, onto the hillside area around the Stanford Heights Reservoir. Early this Spring, you will start to see beautiful native wildflowers growing. The green color is a mixture of seeds, nutrients and mulch.

Landscaping Update: After a few delays with the irrigation system, the contractor will complete the irrigation lines soon and will begin landscaping the area in mid-October.

After landscaping is complete, we will paint the blue valves and the chlorine building next to them to help may Agua Way look great! New landscaping will go in front of the valves too. Repaving of Agua Way will take place next Spring.

San Andreas Pipeline No. 3 Installation Boring Pit on Crespi Drive

Project Summary

The San Andreas Pipeline No. 3 Installation will replace an aging pipeline, with a newly constructed 4 miles extension from Daly City to San Francisco.

In preparing for installation of the San Andreas Pipeline No. 3, crews will dig a pit to bore or drill an underground tunnel to make space for the new water pipeline.

The bore pit will be located at the Crespi Drive round-about circle in Parkmerced. Crews will bore under 19th Avenue to Holloway Avenue.

Crews will begin digging the pit in late September 2009. Boring is expected to be completed by the end of October 2009.

The SFPUC appreciates continued neighborhood input on the reservoir and pump station projects at Stanford Heights Reservoir and Mt Davidson Pump Station.

The landscaping phase is beginning and soon neighbors will see the addition of new native plants and bushes around the reservoir. Hydroseeding, which is a spray mix of wildflower seeds, will be added behind the new fence soon.

We appreciate many of our Agua Way neighbors meeting with us and Supervisor Elsbernd at the site recently to discuss alternatives for the area near the chlorine building and the blue valves. We will discuss options with our project team and follow up soon. The Water Department is making plans to repaint the chlorine building this fall to match the new pump station on Agua Way. Once we complete these projects by the end of the year, we believe the area will look great again.

Mt Davidson Pump Station Making Progress

The new water pumping station on Agua Way is making progress and the project team hopes to complete the project before the end of the year.

The new terracotta roof in nearly complete and the building will be painted soon.

The street work on Agua Way in front of the pump station will start up again around September 8th with Water Dept crews welding the pipes and finishing connections. The project team will make sure the plates on Agua are secured so not to cause noise from car traffic.

We realize the area does not look great due to the staging area and storage boxes but it is temporary and the materials will move soon - we promise. We apologize for the inconvenience.

New Fence and Landscaping at Stanford Heights Reservoir

The contractor is making progress on the installation of the new fence around Stanford Heights Reservoir. We expect the reservoir project to be complete in early fall.

Several neighbors have voiced concerns about the height of the fence. The ten-foot fence is required by Homeland Security due to the fact this is a drinking water reservoir.

Landscaping work is taking place with the installation of many native, low-water-use plants and bushes.

As we near completion, we will install additional landscaping in front of the blue valves on Agua Way. Once landscaping is complete, we will paint the blue valves a better color so they blend into the hillside and tunnel. The nearby building to the left of the valves will also be repainted a similar color to the new pump station on Agua Way.

We expect the new pump station to be complete in December or early January.

Final Paving Work

This project is near completion. The contractor will be performing final paving on Christopher Drive from Clarendon to approximately 81 Christopher Drive starting Wednesday, July 15 to Friday, July 17 between 6:30 am and 5:30 pm. Traffic will be impacted while one lane of traffic will remain open.

Fence Installation Beginning this Summer

Installation of the new security fence around Stanford Heights Reservoir is beginning! New fence posts can be seen along Agua Way. It will be a 10 foot high, black vinyl-clad fence surrounding the reservoir.

The east reservoir basin retrofit work is nearing completion and will be placed back in service in early fall.

The countdown to completion of the Stanford Heights Reservoir Seismic Retrofit project is beginning!

In summer 2009, residents can expect to see a new 10 foot security fence installed around the perimeter. New landscaping will be installed in late July/August to beautify the area. Native wildflower and grass seeds will be adding using 'hydroseeding' and colorful native plants and bushes will be planted.

Tank Retrofit on top of Mt. Davidson Making Progress

The water tank retrofit project on top of Mt. Davidson is making progress and the majority of the work will be complete by the end of 2009. The pipeline installation project finished quickly and trails were reopened early. Soon neighbors and park enthusiasts will again enjoy the scenic vistas from the lookout area near the tank. The water tank retrofit will help ensure it can withstand the next major earthquake and continue to deliver water to neighborhoods and businesses.

Stanford Heights Reservoir Retrofit Moving Toward Completion

With the retrofit of the east reservoir basin almost complete, the project team feels the entire project will finish in Fall 2009. This summer, residents can expect to see installation of the new 10 foot fence around the perimeter of the property. A new retaining wall along the La Bica path will be installed in June. Landscaping is scheduled for early Fall and will include new drought-tolerate, native plants, grasses and flowers. The SFPUC will keep the neighborhood updated as we begin the countdown toward completion.

Mt. Davidson Pump Station Taking Shape!

Designed to resemble the style of homes in the neighborhood, the new, modern Mt. Davidson Pump Station on Agua Way has a new foundation, walls and a recently installed terracotta tile roof. Energy efficient pumps and equipment will be installed this summer. The project is expected to finish in late 2009.

More Buzz About the Bees

Thanks for your comments and questions about the bees in Laguna Honda. We spoke with volunteer Peter Cook from the San Francisco Bee Keepers' Association and he explained that they have approximately 35 hives at the Laguna Honda site and do not plan to add more hives at this time.

The bees help to pollinate the plants at Laguna Honda and the nearby community garden. Peter welcomes questions and he is happy to talk with any curious neighbors or provide a tour.

I checked out a neighbor's query about the bee hives along the back of Laguna Honda Reservoir. Apparently, The San Francisco Bee Keepers Association has applied for and received a permit to keep bees at Laguna Honda. A similar agreement has been in effect on the Peninsula Watershed for many years. If the association is interested, perhaps Peter Cook, with the SF Bee Keepers, could make a presentation at an upcoming meeting or respond to your questions or suggestions.

Access and Parking Limitations on Agua Way on or around March 17th

A large concrete pumping truck will be required to place the concrete inside the wall forms of the new pump station on Agua Way near La Bica. The truck will be on site on or around Tuesday, March 17th, depending on weather.

Contractor NTK Construction will place “Road Closed to Through Traffic” signs at the intersections of both Agua at Teresita and Agua at Chaves.

A flag person will be onsite at Teresita at Agua to help direct traffic. Agua Way residents will have access to their driveways and the street. Some minor delays can be expected. “No Parking” signs will be posted on the reservoir side of Agua Way in advance.

Due to the amount of concrete to be poured, the contractor may need to work as late as 6:30pm.

Soil Stabilization and Equipment Safety Training at Summit Reservoir

Ground asphalt was recently spread on the dirt area near the Summit Reservoir walking path to help provide soil stabilization and tire traction for emergency vehicles. The site will also be used for period equipment safety training for our Water Department staff.

The Water Department coordinates required equipment training 'in-house' to train and certify employees on safe use of cranes and other equipment. We save thousands of dollars in taxpayer money by doing the training ourselves instead of hiring outside companies. We will periodically use Summit Reservoir for this training. Very little noise can be expected from the training and the walking path will remain open.

On or around March 30th and 31st, a small crane will be on site at Summit Reservoir and neighbors will notice Water Department staff and trainers using the crane. Additional training will take place in April and future months.

Moving soil near Laguna Honda Pond

Dear neighbors,

Thank you for your comments on the equipment and pile of soil located near the old Laguna Honda Reservoir. This SFPUC property is used as a staging area by the contractor for the Forest Knolls pump station project. We have instructed the contractor to clear out the dirt pile by mid-April as they will no longer need the soil after that. However, the equipment currently used for the pump station project will remain until late July 2009.

Minor water discoloration update

We received a few calls/emails from neighbors about minor water discoloration in the Forest Knolls area last week after the water transmission line connection work on February 18th. The Water Department took immediate action to correct the problem. Minor water discoloration, odor or taste differences can sometimes occur when water transmission mains are connected. We thank you for your continued support and apologize for the inconvenience.

The contractor is currently performing electrical and mechanical work inside the new pump station building on Christopher at Clarendon Avenue. Installation of new landscaping materials is anticipated to start within the next 60 days.

Traffic Calming Information

Neighbors on Agua Way have asked about traffic calming measures to address the ongoing problem of speeding car traffic.

The San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic can work with a neighborhood to research the best methods to decrease speeding car traffic. The first step is to contact them and complete an application to start the research process. The Department of Parking and Traffic will track car traffic to determine what traffic calming measures will help decrease speeding.

New Palo Alto Pump Station Countdown to Completion

The new Palo Alto Pump Station is on the count down to completion. The contractor has been working tirelessly on the final phase of the project that includes completing the roofing and installing fencing and landscaping. Beautiful, tall bamboo trees have been planted and are expected to flourish and thicken quickly. The temporary pump station, located on Marview, will be removed soon. We expect final completion of the project in spring 2009.

Response to Agua Way neighbors

Here are a few responses to neighbor questions from our February 7th community coffee:

Concerns about exposed blue pipes mid-block on Agua Way: the Water Dept will repaint them and work with neighbors to choose a better color. We cannot add wood slats to the fence but painting the pipes will help them blend in better.

Request for street repaving after projects: The streets are not on the Depart of Public Work's 5-year repaving list but given our inquiries they will be sending a staff person to review the streets for possible consideration for future street paving. The SFPUC contractor will repair areas that are damaged - both sidewalk and street.

Request for traffic calming on Agua Way: Many neighbors are concerned about speeding traffic on Agua Way. The SFPUC contacted the Department of Parking and Traffic and will provide information to neighbors about the process of applying for traffic calming measures.
